Return path monitoring is essential as a means to keep a watch on the return spectrum for transient interference, noise, common path distortion (CPD), laser clipping, and other problems.
The first step in developing a successful alignment and maintenance strategy for the return path depends on understanding what constitutes a properly operating system. If you have not already done so, review your system parameters so that you will have the following information handy:
When the SST is setup according to the 9581 SST R4 Operation Manual, it reserves about 15 dB of its amplitude measurement range to prevent the digitizer from being overloaded by powerful ingress transients. 10 dB of this “guard band” is visible as the top division on the 9581 SST R4’s spectrum display with an additional 5 dB above that.
Please enter as much information as possible. If you are unsure about any IP information, please contact your Internet service provider (ISP) or IT/MIS department for more details or call your contact at Trilithic.
Effective, efficient preventive maintenance for the RF portion of the HFC network requires skill and application specific tols. One of the most useful tools for alignment and troubleshooting is system sweeping.
Before you begin using your 9581SST R4 system, let’s review the theory behind return path alignment and maintenance.
HFC network engineers with IP telephony service experience know that high- quality services are founded on a clear plan for system oversight that includes monitoring, aligning, maintaining, troubleshooting and proper installation.
